There's no way we're getting to the end of our list without mentioning Ellen DeGeneres. Yes, every single public figure takes a risk when leaving the closet. But over two decades ago, Ellen put her professional life on the line when she came out on live TV in front of 42 million people!
Luckily, she was able to continue doing what she does best—hosting prime-quality daytime television. She's become one of the best-known LGBTQ symbols in the world. In 2008, she tied the knot with the model/philanthropist Portia De Rossi.
Ruby Rose
While some people can hide their truth and wait for the best moment to shout it out, Australian model Ruby Rose was not so lucky... She came out when she was only 12 years old, and she was abused and taunted in school about it—to the point of attempting suicide.
Luckily, Ruby was able to get past that dark period of her childhood to become a highly-successful model and TV presenter. She hosted Australia's Next Top Model and eventually made it to the US to work as an actress. She's appeared in productions such as Orange Is the New Black, The Meg, and Pitch Perfect 3.

Dusty Springfield
When she started out her career, Dusty Springfield was understandably afraid of coming out. However, she eventually did and was able to live her life to the fullest. Dusty was never a person to shy away from adventure since her life was full of it.
Her songs like If You Go Away and Son of a Preacher Man are still known to the day. She passed away at the age of 59 in 1999. Some of her most memorable relationships were the ones with Norma Tanega in the ‘60s and ‘70s and Teda Bracci in 1982.

Ian McKellen's outstanding acting career is indissociable from his classic part as 'Gandalf' in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And yet, he appeared in over 100 movies during the last 6 decades! His career came to an end in 2013, when he announced his retirement following his lengthy and successful career. In regards to his personal orientation, Richard has explicitly stated that he's gay. However, he has also had interactions with women over the years, which leads us to question his statement.
Meredith Baxter
The now 72-year-old American actress and producer Meredith Baxter gained fame for her roles as Nacy Lawrence in Family and Elyse Donnelly Keaton in Family Ties. Even after nearly five decades, Baxter is still active in her career. She had three failed marriages, from which she gave birth to five children.
After her marriages failed, she came out as a lesbian in 2009. She has been in a romantic relationship with Nancy Locke since 2005, and the couple tied the knot in December 2013. Following the discovery of her personal orientation, Baxter's unsuccessful marriages with men began to make sense.
Don Lemon
American television journalist Don Lemon is one of the few openly gay men in the broadcasting industry. He proudly got engaged with the real estate agent Tim Malone in 2019. Don Lemon first came out in 2011, back when he released his memoirs book Transparent.
He first got his start in the local news of Alabama and Pennsylvania. Don then landed the opportunity of working in nation-wide broadcasting when he became an NBC correspondent. Later, he found a place in the CNN network. Don is currently known for hosting CNN Tonight with Don Lemon.
Jameela Jamil
Jameela Jamil has been part of our televisions for almost a decade now. Given that she’s also been in a relationship with James Blake ever since 2015, we were all amazed to see her coming out as queer in early 2020. With all fairness, Jameela has always been open about her beliefs.

Did you know that Dr. Niles Crane from Frasier is part of the LGBTQ community? We were as surprised as you when we found out. But as it turns out, David Hyde Pierce has been married to the American writer/producer Brian Hargrove since 2008.
While Frasier is by far David Hyde's best-known project, he has appeared in several other productions, too. He starred in movies like Down With Love, Wet Hot American Summer, and A Bugs' Life. In 2020, he will be playing a priest in a film called The Georgetown Project.
George Takei
Star Trek superstar and sci-fi hero George Takei has never tried to hide his romantic preferences. He's been a tireless defender of LGBTQ rights for years, working actively in state and local politics to ensure better rights and living conditions for the community.
Additionally, Takei has opened an LGBTQ-oriented night club in Los Angeles, where he met his husband, Brad Altman. He is an outspoken opponent of Donald Trump's policies towards immigration and has been one of the most politically relevant celebrities of the past few decades. She’s been incredibly outspoken about being bi, so seeing Halsey hanging out with Ruby Rose comes as no surprise. In fact, they’ve been friends for a few years now, but they're not in a relationship. Halsey only just revealed that she's dating Evan Peters from American Horror Story through her Instagram account.

Zachary Quinto
When the hit series Heroes first aired on NBC, Zachary Quinto—playing the part of the villain 'Sylar'—quickly became one of the show's most popular actors. David Cronenberg & Viggo Mortensen
For a special entry on our list, let's have a look at David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen. While none of these two men is considered to be openly gay, their work is heavily directed at the LGBTQ community. After all, the notable director and actor duo gave us the 2007 action drama Eastern Promises.
In Eastern Promises, starring Mortensen, Cronenberg tells a gangster story with a twist. According to a CBC interview, he intended to include a subliminal message of same-gender romance within the movie's violence. When Eastern Promises was released, Cronenberg told the press he believed every male group was mainly dominated by carnal-related idiosyncrasies.
Sara Gilbert
American actress, director, and producer Sara Gilbert dated fellow Roseanne co-star Johnny Galecki for a while before realizing she was into girls. A founder member of the popular talk-show The View, Sara has remained close friends with Galecki even after the break-up.
