It's near retail stores and various dining establishments, for starters. What's more, residing in the area means getting access to the Big Apple's employment opportunities, which can help pay for this modest home. Of course, there are some downsides, too, especially considering the Bronx's high crime rates.

Birmingham, Alabama | Price: $544K

The building itself is located right at the heart of things, just walking distance from the Kaka'ako neighborhood's array of eateries, juice bars, and an open-air mall.

Boise, Idaho | Price: $499,900

This clinker brick residence in Boise, Idaho, may not be a deluxe house, but its charm and location make up for it. It remains in excellent condition, considering that it was constructed in the '40s. Its kitchen has been renovated, too, justifying the home's $499K price tag.

It takes a lot of dough to live a glamorous life in expensive Los Angeles. So, we aren't that shocked that a $500K home there is nothing write to home about. However, you'll be pleased to know that this quaint 1,074-square-foot home in the City of Angels has undergone a transformation. 

Initially listed for $490K on Redfin in February 2021, it was sold for an impressive $655K in September of the same year. Safe to say, someone took on the challenge of fixing up this three-bedroom residence as an investment and earned a good profit from it. 

Chicago, Illinois | Price: $499,900

Although this $499K American Foursquare home was built back in 1911, it has been upgraded to be fit for modern living. Of course, that's not to say this Ritz-Carlton residence isn't luxurious in its own right! Located close to the city's sights, the building offers its residents access to fine retail stores and a theater multiplex.

Detroit, Michigan | Price: $488,900

Newark, New Jersey | Price: $499,950

A budget of $500K in Newark, New Jersey, will get you this multi-family home in the city's West Side community. It's not the best-looking place, for sure, but this nine-bedroom residence can be a good investment if you're planning to rent it out.

The tradeoff here, though, is that Newark does not have the best reputation with the website Area Vibes giving it a poor livability score due to low-income levels paired with relatively high living costs.

Portland, Oregon | Price: $527,934

According to US News, Portland in Oregon is in the top ten best metro places to live in the United States. That said, it comes as no surprise that housing prices in the city have been rising with the influx of people moving there. If you have a $500K budget, you'll get something like this mid-century three-bedroom residence.

Valued at $527K, it is located in the Rock Creek neighborhood, which is just 15 minutes away from the city's downtown area. The home, although already decades-old, has been updated a couple of times over the years with the addition of a cedar deck in the back and upgraded plumbing.

Albuquerque, New Mexico | Price: $485K

If you want to build a new home or buy a relatively new one, you're $500K will go far in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Just take this 2,902-square-foot home in the Paradise Bluff neighborhood, for example. At $485K, it comes with a stylish home with a wrap-around balcony and a swimming pool!

Charlotte, North Carolina | Price: $545K

Built during the '40s, this charming three-bedroom cottage home will set you back $545K. That's already a steal, though, considering that the other houses in Charlotte, North Carolina's Chantilly neighborhood, will require you to take out an even larger home loan as they average between $650K to $1 million, according to Trulia.

Although comparably small from the other homes we've seen, this 1,572-square-foot residence makes up for it in backyard space and location. It's a short distance from the park and the trendy Plaza-Midwood. Charlotte's uptown business district is also just minutes away if you drive.

Fargo, North Dakota | Price: $499,900

If you don't mind suffering through harsh winters, then Fargo, North Dakota, might be a place worth considering. For $499K, you can afford to live in this beautiful home located in the Ashwood development. Conceptualized by the house designer to be lived in, it features an open main floor layout and four bedrooms.

It spans 3,708 square feet, which means plenty of space for a sunroom, an office, and a large kitchen with a walk-in pantry. Young families will also appreciate its proximity to the Deer Creek Elementary School and Deer Creek Park.

Columbus, Ohio | Price: $539,900

This one's a bit over budget. But if you're willing to pay the price for a scenic view and privacy, then this four-bedroom home in Columbus, Ohio, would be worth the $539K price tag. Designed in the English Tudor style, it backs into a wooded backyard.
