The advancements in camera technology have made it so that you can literally get a picture of a Formula 1 motor vehicle racing and make it seem like it's not moving. What makes a good photograph though? Is it the camera? Is it the photographer? Or is it just pure luck? If you think you've had a tough week, here are some people who have clearly had it worse than you. Take a look at some pictures that were taken at exactly the right moment. They might make you laugh or cry, but one thing's for sure, they are all unique!
Falling head over heels for you!
Playing sports can sometimes be dangerous. Here we can see Greg Olson proving that statement. Although it might look like he had some sort of an accident, he knew very well what he was doing. This picture was taken on the first game of the World Series of 1991. Greg, in his attempt to make the catch, fell in this position after being flipped by the other team's leadoff hitter, Dan Gladden. However, Greg's team, the Atlanta Braves, did end up winning the game and the world series in seven games.
Ballet-ball
We all know that basketball is a tough and highly demanding sport. However, things tend to get messy in court sometimes. But what's wrong from having fun from time to time, especially if you do it for a living, right? In this picture, we can see J.R. Smith from the NY Knicks who has just made a shot, clearly trying to mock his opponents. People around him are hurt, no one is looking at him, yet he grabs the opportunity to do some aerial gymnastics; that or he's showing off his dancing skills! If you came here looking for ballerina photos, you won't be disappointed!
You won't like me angry
This photograph was taken during the 2016 Rio Olympics. It portrays the first Hulk-like transformation ever to be recorded on TV. Just kidding! It's a picture of Andrei Muntean's performance in Artistic Gymnastics. To be fair, let us explain that air flips and twirling several times require a great lot of concentration skills and fitness to be perfect. It does, however, make you wonder what would happen if someone were to edit this picture with a toilet seat underneath Andrei! He didn't manage to win this competition, but he did, however, get this not-so-flattering photo as a reminder.
Please, someone, do something!
Funny faces aside, this is a pretty every-day soccer photo captured likely by a professional photographer. It's from a match between Manchester United and Manchester City. Any good Manchester United fan would now know that the athlete in this picture is none other than Phil Jones, who just so happens to be very well known for his funny faces. This was yet another time that he delivered what the crowd was asking for! It makes you wonder though, what exactly might have been happening at that moment to make both of the players look so afraid for their lives?
Rodeo? More like bull tossing!
Have you ever wondered what a cowboy would look like upside down? Well, here it is! Try not to think of the crash landing that came right after. Let's just hope that the rodeo clowns showed up in time to redirect the bull and save the rider after the fall. But then again, how far off from your everyday life could it be, if you chose to ride bulls for a living? This guy must have good life insurance! If this photo were taken one second later, we probably wouldn’t be laughing out loud right now. Or maybe we would, who knows.
Gymnastics class
This picture here portrays Miguel Cabrera performing a diving catch in a World Baseball Classic match of 2009. And even though a good diving catch is no biggie for big-time baseball players like him, he does present it with a noticeable smoothness in his movements. He's even saving his breath for when he goes underwater. One would even say that it looks like he's doing push-ups with one hand. Did he even catch the ball though? We do not know. He sure got the right pose for it though! All that workout and practice must have contributed to that form, too!
Ouch!
This photograph was taken during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It pictures a Greco-Roman wrestling match, the Hungarian Zoltan Fodor (blue) against the Chinese Ma Sanyi (red). Did he, however, jump and land there? Was that his purpose? What happened next? Who was winning? One thing's for sure - this photo does raise a lot of questions. Zoltan did take home the gold after all. He was lucky enough that the lenses caught him fighting so hard for it at the right timing. Now, he has this great photograph to always remember this moment. As for Ma Sanyi? Well, he must have felt that the next morning.
Jack, I'm flying!
Freestyle Motocross is the sport where the bike riders basically try to impress the panel of judges by doing crazy stunts, among other things of course. Here we can see this rider performing a backflip. However, he's doing it with such grace that it makes you think that he's not engaged in an absolutely dangerous activity. It makes us realize as well that if any of us normal human beings were to perform, we'd probably freeze up from anxiety and fear! But flying like that must feel awesome. Let's just hope that he landed that stunt and got a nice rating off of it!
My Precious
Not many people can say that they are interested in handball, but this picture here sure proves us wrong. This goalie is so determined to catch this ball thrown at her that she's not just throwing her hands in, but her legs, chest, and face! By whatever means necessary, even if it ruins her manicure, as long as this ball here is caught, she's giving her all! If it were under any other context, one would say that this ball was the last thing standing between her and her eternal happiness. It would, however, be such a shame if she missed it, wouldn´t it?
Strike a pose
This is a picture of the English soccer player, Titus Bramble. However, it does kind of look as if he was trying to strike a pose and got suddenly interrupted by this giant soccer ball on his head. But to be fair, header photos are always a bit funny. And what is that? He either needs to get his sweat glands checked out or maybe next time, get an umbrella! Either way, this gigantic splash on his head created by the impact, is just another example of the camera catching the perfect moment.
Someone, get this ball out of here!
This is a picture of basketball player Drew Gooden during one of his matches. Everything seems to be normal until… Wait a minute, aren't basketball players supposed to want the ball in their possession? Here, Drew appears really scared for his life! But then again, who knows? It might have been an explosive ball or something. Maybe the Milwaukee Bucks were having a last-one-to-touch-the-ball-is-a-loser contest and Drew was just getting into the spirit. We have no clue if they won the match or not, but judging from the opponent’s facial expression, they probably didn’t.
Keeping it cool
This picture is clearly taken during a Red Sox baseball match. It was yet another perfect moment to take a picture and give us the opportunity to look closely at those people's reactions. The spectators appear generally excited, not counting that guy in the middle who apparently couldn't care less. What a way to keep it cool! To be fair, some baseballs do catch quite good money if they're sold, especially if they're from a nice match. It's always awesome to see all these feelings in a single picture though - fear, excitement, agony, fear again, and dread...
I wasn't cheating, I swear!
This is a picture of Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion against Fernandinho from Manchester City during a match. Having a helping hand is always nice. In this particular case though, is it really necessary? Soccer is not meant to be played with hands, is it? Anyway, what are they really reaching for anyway, since there is no actual soccer ball in sight? Unless the professional photographer was two seconds early! Well, it's better to be safe than to be sorry that's for sure, even if you might have to cheat your way to victory...or maybe not.
Safety Measures
Hockey is a rough sport. Extreme and aggressive behavior may lead to a penalty. However, what could this person have possibly done to deserve his head being knocked off? We have all heard of the Headless Horseman, and this might be the sequel: The Headless Hockey Player. Come to think of it, what is the reason for wearing a helmet, if it's just going to fly off with the first chance it gets? They clearly need to update their safety measures. Thankfully this time, it was just his helmet that fell off. They'd better be giving their players a nice salary.
I Don’t Need This Anymore
This here, is a picture of Alexander Rodriguez aka A-Rod, on a match just before retiring in 2016. A-Rod is one of the highest-paid baseball players of our time receiving a $27-million paycheck just to retire. We can see in this photo that he is ready to move on; done with it, to put it politely. You can almost imagine him thinking of what food he's going to eat after the match is over. Oh, and how did that bat get there? Aren't they supposed to be throwing balls at each other, not bats?
The art of a Hangover
Synchronized swimming is an artistic sport that combines dancing, gymnastics, and of course, swimming. Everything from the outfits and make-up to the actual moves has to be perfect. However, this picture here, kind of makes you remember of that time when a friend got way too drunk from the last couple drinks and someone had to help him get it out of his system. It ended up being so disgusting that both of them just failed to keep it in. Keeping those details aside, it does look like this performance was truly spectacular.
Breakdancing-ball
This photo is actually from a college basketball match. The University of Dayton vs Boise State University. It is actually a picture of the leap that allowed the young player Chandler Hutchison take home the victory for the Dayton team. However, if you try and look at it from a different perspective, it's kind of like they are either filming the next Matrix movie or just practicing their breakdance moves. It makes you wonder though, where exactly is the ball in this picture? Are they just training maybe? No one could argue that the photographer's timing was perfect though.
Water mask
This photograph is of Tyler Clary, participating in the 2012 Olympic, men's 200-meter backstroke. It's actually the perfect explanatory picture for the water surface tension phenomenon. That basically tells us that water has a skin, in a manner of speaking, and here our swimmer Tyler is just about to break it. However, it does look like Clary's wearing a water mask, if not a full outfit. The timing of this picture is truly extraordinary. And given that Tyler actually won this race, this photo must be a nice part of his memorabilia.
Can you do this?
Dennis Rodman, aka The Worm, was originally known for his remarkable rebound and defense skills when it came to basketball. He did, however, change that quite easily after leaving the NBA. He even showed up wearing a wedding dress to promote his own autobiography. However, this is just another piece of evidence that he was an excellent basketball player during his time, as we can see him in this picture defying the rules of physics to catch this ball. Meanwhile, the cameraman in the corner must be holding his breath...
Is that a human in my head?
This here is a picture of the expert jockey Julien Leparoux and his horse Sanibel Storm. In April 2006, they apparently had a tiny accident during one of their races. As we can see here, Julien is trying hard to hold on to Sanibel´s saddle. Meanwhile, his horse must have been surprised by his rider's behavior. The most awkward thing about this photograph that one might argue is that the photographer´s initial instinct of taking a shot instead of running for his life! Thankfully, Julien and Sanibel walked out of this race with no severe injuries.
The yoga practices paid off
This image here is actually a photo of an I-spin stunt in figure skating. However, it does almost make you feel instant pain when watching it for the first time. This figure skater though does not seem at all affected by the fact that everything in her body is perfectly lining up in position and places that are not feasibly possible. On the other hand, she looks like she's in control. It makes you think how many hours of yoga practices combined with a good workout schedule she had to go through to be able to stretch as much...
He's going to feel that in the morning
There's actually a term for what we're seeing right now. It's called high siding. Basically, it's when you lose control of your bike and you both fly off in different directions. This picture here is of a bike rider named Damien Cudlin, racing in Australia's Moto GP. Thankfully, he did not suffer any major injuries as he was able to continue with his career. He didn't win that race though and probably had to replace his bike, not to mention what he must have felt the next morning. Let's just hope he had good motorcycle insurance to cover the damages - to him and his bike!
Get back on that horse!
This is another image of a jockey falling off of his horse. This time, however, it looks like the horse decided to run the race without the rider! It was either that or someone jumped into the race while the horse was running to stop it! Unfortunately, according to the horse racing rules, the horse has to finish the race with the jockey riding it; anything other than that and they're both disqualified. This is just another example of the camera capturing the exact moment. Hopefully, the jockey didn't suffer any major injuries, although it looks like he might have been stepped on a couple of seconds later.
Phones are bad for your health
This is a picture of the crowd during a Pirates vs. Braves baseball match. The Pirates outfielder apparently lost control of his bat resulting in it being thrown into the audience. However, this little boy in the picture was severely attached to his phone and was clueless about what was happening. Thankfully, the little boy met his savior that day and avoided getting stitches on his head! Also, this could have left a huge mark on his forehead. People have always said that too much of anything is a dangerous thing, kiddo.
Keep your eyes on the puck
For those of you who don't do hockey, a puck is basically the ball in ice-hockey. Simply put, it's a rubber disk that people push around with their sticks. This ice-hockey player here was told to keep his eyes on the puck and probably took it way too literally for his own health. It was either that or he was trying to imitate a clown's nose. Either way, this is definitely one scenario that could happen in the rink. His facial expression when he realizes that he's going to get hit is priceless. Be advised, do not try this at home!
Mirror mirror on the wall
Wakeboard is an extremely awesome and difficult sport. The stunt we're looking at in this picture is called a butter slide and this guy appears to be an expert when it comes to it. The coolest thing about this photo though isn't so much the trick itself as the awesome reflection of the man in the water. It's as if he is looking at himself in the mirror saying, 'wow, those hours spent in the gym training did pay off after all!' It just makes you wonder, however, how he would get back on his feet after that maneuver.
Water Clowns?
Whether this was a part of their routine or not, this photograph is inexplicable. First of all, the stylist who chose their outfits probably didn’t want them to win. Imagine waking up to that image in their swimming suits! Scary, right? Now, about their makeup artist. There's a lot of effort going in creating products that can last so well under water - like adding silicon oil to their facial products and even gelatine to make their heads waterproof. Although, if their goal was to look like water clowns then, it was a job well done. If that wasn't their goal, well… What was it?
Moon-lympics
This is a photo of the Central London Bridge in 2012 after they hung these 82-foot wide and 36-foot tall Olympic rings. Fortunately enough, the rings combined with a clear sky and a full moon created this breath-taking photograph. Or maybe the moon decided to steal the show as the sixth Olympic ring that didn't work out. Either way, this (presumably) professional photographer had a great eye and managed to catch that perfect moment and spot. We couldn't help but ask how hard it was to actually hang those perfectly structured rings there...
Hello, is it me you are looking for?
To be fair, wrestling is a contact sport. These guys, however, seem to have taken speed dating to the next level. Even looking at this picture makes you feel bad for interrupting their moment. In Greco-Roman wrestling, your goal is to throw the opponent on the ground without using any trips, hits or kicks below the waist. However, it almost makes you want to add a romantic tune playing in the background and start dancing. But seriously, this better be the beginning of the match because they are not even sweating!
I'm going in!
A group hug is a demonstration of love and friendship when having to do with more than just a couple of people. These players have gotten excited over something and want to share the love with their team. Or could they be arguing? Who knows what started it, who knows how it ended? Number 5, however, seems particularly excited about whatever it is that's going on in this picture. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? The only sure thing about this was that someone, probably the guy in the bottom of that pile, had to pay a visit to the doctor once that moment passed.
Water Rider
One of Jesus' most famous miracle was walking on water. This guy, Robbie Maddison, took it to the next level. This picture was taken in Tahiti and was actually the result of three entire years of research in making the perfect wave-riding motorcycle. He literally used skis underneath the water to help him float on his bike. Who wouldn't want to do that - ride a bike and surf at the same time? There are many more pictures where that came from, and Robbie even made a video of his attempts. It's one of the coolest things we've seen in a while!
The Big Bang
There are reports of the fastest ever tennis serve to reach a speed up to 163.7 mph! However, one would say that tennis balls fly at an average of 130 mph depending on the circumstances. The fact that this photographer actually managed to capture this tennis ball mid-air is pretty incredible. What's more, the drops from the ball created this somewhat galactic effect around it. On a less impressive matter, it also almost looks like someone had a nice round of fetch with his dog, doesn't it? In any case, we don't think that photography classes teach these kinds of techniques.
Surfing Selfie
This photo was taken by surfer/photographer Leroy Bellet. It's amazing what the photographers have to put themselves through to snap the perfect shot sometimes. Most of the surfing photos we've seen so far have been taken from dry land. That is why this one is so breathtaking. You can see here technology in action so much so that one could actually surf and take pictures at the same time. Of course, the fact that there's a one-of-a-kind sunset going on at the background makes the shot so alive and serene at the same time.
Invisible man caught on camera
A football helmet serves as protective gear for the players, and it consists of a chinstrap, a hard plastic outside, inside padding, and a face mask. Football is a very intense contact sport alright, but what's the point of even wearing a helmet if it's just going to fly off with the first tackle you get? Well, either that or that's an actual invisible human being, or a ghost, participating in this match. The lengths some people go through just to win a match, right? It's yet another example of perfect timing though.
Somewhere over the... Bull!
This here is actually a photo from Pamplona, Spain's San Fermin Festival of 2010. It shows us a bull-leaper attempting to jump over a bull. Even though bullfighting is a controversial form of sport (since no one can guarantee the bull's or the bull fighter's well-being), it's still popular and a part of the culture of Spain and some South American countries. However, this image does say a lot, from the timing to the Superman-like pose the bullfighter has when flying on top of the bull. Only one word can describe it - priceless!
Water is the new black
They say it takes a very skilled photographer to understand when the right moment comes to capture a photo. However, in this particular case, it might as well have been a hilarious coincidence. This is a photograph of swimmer Arthur Fan and his first runway wearing nothing but water (and his swimsuit). Water helmet, water blouse - all you need to do if you want this outfit, is to get yourself a swimming pool, and maybe some exercise as well wouldn't hurt. Arthur, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be affected by any of this. That being said, we can't exactly see the look on his eyes, now can we?
