Hollywood celebrities are beautiful, talented, and obscenely rich. They have everything men and women dream of, but they're not always entitled to privacy. Facing constant surveillance from the public and the media, the world's biggest stars are not always able to take a walk in the park without being followed around by the cameras.
While most celebrities appreciate the public's attention, in some cases the situation can become overwhelming. And when Hollywood's biggest celebrities simply snap, you can be sure there will be a camera registering the moment. In this list, we have collected the all-time most dramatic and surprising celebrity clashes with the paparazzi!
Britney Spears
American singer Britney Spears is still trying to make people forget all about her crazy 2007 meltdown. In an all-time low, the Toxic singer famously attacked a paparazzo's car with an umbrella outside Kevin Federline's house. To add to the drama, Britney decided to show up with a recently-shaved head - a sight we have still not forgotten, more than a decade later...
Britney's 2007 meltdown was so shocking that we cannot feel anything but pity for the former teen star's situation. Living your life without having a moment of peace away from the cameras can be exhausting, and nobody has shown how catastrophic the result can be as Britney did.
Justin Bieber
Canadian teen pop idol Justin Bieber was having a rough time. Soon after being released from the hospital, he found a group of photographers outside his hotel and simply snapped! He was probably going through a hard time because he lashed out uncontrollably against a paparazzo in particular after being reportedly insulted.
For the first time, Bieber's bodyguard was forced to protect the photographers from his client and not the other way around... If it wasn't for him, Justin would've probably hurt a paparazzo for real, and maybe hurt himself in the process as well.
Kanye West
For a paparazzi-hating celebrity, punching a celebrity news' reporter is one of the most satisfying feelings in the world. However, even the rich and powerful - like the American rapper Kanye West - are forced to deal with the consequences of their actions.
After assaulting a paparazzo outside L.A.'s airport, Kanye was forced to pay a settlement to the victim, who was a man by the name of Daniel Ramos. Besides, he was forced to take a picture shaking hands with the photographer! A costly outcome for Kanye, who's probably way better at controlling his emotions after this unpleasant experience.
Mike Myers
Mike Myers' most iconic role has been that of Austin Powers in the film franchise with the same name. Interestingly, since those days, he has stuck mostly to comedy. However, in 2018, he had a special role in the Freddy Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. Usually a very amiable guy, even Myers got tired of the paparazzi one day.
As he was leaving a hockey match, the harassment of the paparazzi seemed to have gotten to him. However, it was his friend, whom he was with during that time, who escalated things after hitting the photographer with his hockey stick, injuring him. In consequence, the man had to be taken to the hospital to get stitches.
Prince Harry
We had almost forgotten about Prince Harry's wild days. It was 2007 and Harry was about to be deployed for service in Iraq. However, he went out partying with his friends. Unfortunately, as he was leaving the club, paparazzi started to follow him until the now-Duke of Sussex had enough.
According to reports—and pictures—Harry went after one paparazzo and looked very mad. Nevertheless, the story from the Palace is completely different. According to them, what we see on camera is a friendly encounter. We're not sure about that. However, Prince Harry, now a husband and father, has completely reformed himself.
Princess Diana
Princess Diana had a complicated relationship with the paparazzi. They were an integral part of her life since she became part of the British royal family. However, she was a very private person and strongly disliked the constant harassment she was submitted to. On more than one occasion, she tried to run away from them.
Tragically, the actions of the paparazzi and her desire to flee them both played roles in her death. Paparazzi were following the car she was riding in, and the maneuvers performed to outsmart them are believed to have been part of the cause of the crash that ended her life.
Taylor Swift
If there's a celebrity who's used to dealing with the paparazzi, that's American singer Taylor Swift. The princess of country-pop is known for being a hard worker when it comes to pleasing fans and such includes dealing graciously with the cameras every single day.
But even a celebrity with a pose and a plan like Taylor Swift can sometimes reach the point of no return. While she has never been caught fighting a paparazzo, she has developed a system for leaving her NYC apartment without being photographed. The trick? Keep your head down and let your staff be your eyes and ears.
Kristen Stewart
Twilight star Kristen Stewart was in the spotlight after her break-up with fellow co-star Robert Pattinson. The paparazzi were doing all they could to make her go crazy, including leaving a hurtful note in her car window with the words "I Love Rob". By now, you can already guess what happened afterward...
A no-patience-left Kristen got involved in a dispute with a paparazzo, and while the feud got quite distasteful, it luckily never reached the point of violence. In this situation, we feel nothing but compassion for Kristen; after all, it's hard enough to go through a break-up without having cameras shoved against your face every single day.
Hugh Grant
When you're the king of the world, the paparazzi's presence happens to be very useful. But when you're going through a bad couple of weeks, there's nothing worse than having a camera following you around all day. British actor Hugh Grant will certainly agree with us since he was arrested for throwing a bag of beans at a snotty photographer in 2007.
At the time, he was facing previous charges from being caught up in the company of a "lady of the night". It was the darkest period of Hugh Grant's career, who is now fortunately back to his good old self and preparing to star in the upcoming series The Undoing.
Justin Timberlake
Actor/singer Justin Timberlake does not like to be bothered by the paparazzi when he's in the company of a beautiful woman. 3 short years after being involved in a pap scandal alongside Cameron Diaz, Justin slapped a photographer's camera while accompanied by his wife, actress Jessica Biel.
Biel was reportedly being heavily pressured by paparazzi, to the point of not being able to move! A furious and protective Timberlake was quick in lashing out against the disturbing photographers, with the violent moment being forever captured on video. Years later, in 2012, Timberlake criticized the paparazzi publically with an accusatory publication on his Twitter account.
Chris Martin
Like airports, hospitals can have an angering effect on celebrities. Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin was leaving the facilities of a private hospital alongside actress and ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow when he was accosted by a very unwelcoming crew of paparazzi.
Probably going through a sensitive and ideally private situation, Martin snapped uncontrollably with anger and attacked one of the photographers. He threw him on the ground, stole his camera, and quickly ran away in an SUV! If these sound like the actions of an experienced paparazzi assaulter, there's a good reason for it! In 2013, Martin was sued by a different photographer for the same reason.
Macaulay Culkin
Macaulay Culkin's career after Home Alone never kicked off in the way most people expected to, and that has probably left some psychological marks on the American actor and DJ. Often teased by how disappointing his acting career turned out to be, Culkin was ready to release some anger on a paparazzo's body after a night out in 2013.
Culkin was leaving a music venue in Brighton with his face covered by a scarf when he was spotted by the paparazzo. He went crazy and reportedly started screaming and cursing, letting loose all of his inner frustrations against the baffled photographer.
Amy Winehouse
The late singer Amy Winehouse had a talent for trouble and that feature made her one of paparazzi's favorite targets. She was photographed assaulting reporters, caught with her top off, and involved in an embarrassing drug-induced photoshoot. Whenever she went, there was a camera following her around and capturing her every move.
Amy Winehouse's case makes you wonder. Following the singer's suicide in 2011, how much of the blame can be attributed to the vicious way celebrity media explores the personal lives of celebrities? We cannot know for sure how much the paparazzi contributed to Amy's death, but we're certain they were part of what made her life so miserable.
Jack Black
Most paparazzi are mean and annoying, but some celebrities are exemplary when dealing with the ever-present photographers. Actor Jack Black was spotted by a man with a camera on the street and, without saying a word, he simulated a kung-fu blow, much to the photographer's delight.
The paparazzo was left smiling and even thanked Jack for his funny interaction. This case works as a good example of how celebrities can have a healthy interaction with photographers. By fake-attacking an annoying paparazzi, Jack showed his dissatisfaction with the situation in an inoffensive and comedic manner.
Hilary Duff
American actress/singer Hillary Duff does not mess around when it comes to protecting her baby! While at a Los Angeles eatery, Hillary's 5-month-old son was disturbed by a camera's flash and this caused Hillary to scream and shoo loudly until the snotty reporter went away.
In 2018, a clearly fed-up and pregnant-for-a-second-time Hillary Duff asked the paparazzi to leave her alone, suggesting every pregnant woman has the right to peace and privacy. We could not agree more! While we respect the work of the paparazzi, we believe some things - like motherhood - are more important than celebrity news and should always be respected.
Mel Gibson
If beating paparazzi was a sport, Australian actor Mel Gibson would be the world's greatest athlete. There are tons of paparazzi-hating celebrities out there, but there's no one with as much hate in his heart as the controversial Mel Gibson. From a celebrity photographer's point of view, there's no assignment more dangerous than going out for a piece of Mel Gibson.
In 2009, he completely ripped a paparazzo's shirt off after a Los Angeles night out. The photographer was trying to snap a picture of Gibson's ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva, who was pregnant at the time when he was brutally assaulted by the enraged Australian. Better luck next time, mate!
Sean Penn
Sean Penn is a remarkable actor with outstanding performances in movies such as 21 Grams, Milk, and The Tree of Life. But if there's one thing he loves as much as acting, that's fighting the paparazzi! In 1986, he served 30 days of jail time after assaulting a snotty photographer and in 2009, over 20 years later, he did it again!
One more time, Sean Penn's impatience towards the ever-vigilant paparazzi proved costly. For his second misdemeanor, he was sentenced to 36 months probation and forced to work 300 hours of community service. Has he finally learned his lesson? Somehow, we don't think so...
Miley Cyrus
Former Disney Channel star/singer Miley Cyrus has a well-known on-and-off bad girl attitude, and one particular paparazzo is more than aware of the fact. The photographer was chasing Miley down the parking lot of a California Chicken Cafe when he accidentally hit the singer's mom with his camera.
Very protective of her mother, the producer Tish Cyrus, Miley went from chill to furious in a matter of seconds and lashed out against the reporter. While very famous public figures like Miley are accustomed to dealing with the paparazzi daily, they often make an effort to protect their less-known family members and friends.
Lily Allen
Pop singer Lily Allen was a big name in the music industry during the late 2000s and, at the height of her fame, she was easily annoyed by the paparazzi. In 2009, Lily got her lucky shot when a car with two photographers crashed against the back of her car, ignored the accident, and continued following her around.
The situation, somewhat reminiscent of Princess Diana's tragical story, was in the origin of a lawsuit that Lily filled against the paparazzi companies Big Pictures and Matrix Photos. The case went to court and Lily won. Now, photographers from both companies are legally forced to stay at least 100 meters away from the Not Fair singer.
Heather Mills
The paparazzi are not meant to follow the same ethical code that applies to most regular journalists. That's why they're rarely impartial and often show the tendency to mindlessly support some celebrities while blindly criticizing others.
Former model/businesswoman Heather Mills knows all about these malpractices. After all, she was publically criticized by celebrity media to the point of completely losing it! In a GMTV public statement, Heather disclosed she was at one point considering the option of suicide... Sometimes, paparazzi just take things way too far and deserve a proper kick from behind!
Lindsay Lohan
Child stars are like a box of chocolates. You never know who you're going to get. Actress Lindsay Lohan seemed destined to a lifetime of praise and success after appearing in movies like The Parent Trap and Mean Girls. Instead, she's been involved in countless polemic stories and paparazzi feuds, with the best-known happening in 2007.
At the time, Lindsay was trying to drive away from a group of snotty snappers when she allegedly ran over the paparazzo Giovanni Arnold. The man sued Lohan, claiming permanent personal injuries, and the actress defended herself on Late Show with David Letterman by saying the photographer completely faked it.
Alec Baldwin
30 Rock actor/Donald Trump impersonator Alec Baldwin seems to have a sixth sense for getting involved with the paparazzi. He's not liked amongst celebrity news photographers because he often does not share the belief that the paparazzi are just normal people doing their job...
In 1995, he was accused of stealing battery charges from a photographer. In 1996, he clashed with a paparazzo who was waiting outside the hospital shortly after the birth of his daughter Ireland. And in 2012, Alec proved old habits die hard when he violently slammed a journalist against a car in mid-New York.
Liam Gallagher
Oasis' musician Liam Gallagher is known for being an outspoken celebrity with a lot of foul things to say about his fellow artists. In 2001, he used his loud mouth to criticize and challenge a London paparazzo. The man tried to calm Liam down, but his efforts proved inefficient.
One year later, Liam got his teeth knocked out during a fight in a Munich club. The aggressors were supposedly involved with the local Mafia but turned out to be a group of computer engineers - nerds to put it best - much to Liam's embarrassment.
Russell Brand
Actor/comedian Russell Brand was experiencing the height of his fame when he turned himself to the authorities in 2012 for ruining a paparazzo's phone. During an airport clash with a photographer named Timothy Jackson, Russell stole the man's iPhone and threw it outside.
The star of hilarious movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, Russell Brand had been arrested two years before the event took place for a similar altercation with the paparazzi. At the time, he was trying to protect his then-girlfriend, pop singer Katy Perry. He was released by the police on both occasions.
Lamar Odom
Former professional basketball player Lamar Odom was married to Khloe Kardashian from 2009 to 2016, and one of the perks of the job was having cameras following him around all day. In 2013, he finally snapped on the snotty photographers after allegedly being asked if he was cheating on his then-wife.
Lamar was filled with rage when he challenged two paparazzi by directly stealing one's recording gear (which he saved in his car trunk) and by smashing the car of another with a metal bar. The 6'10" former athlete is definitely someone you want to keep from getting angry, especially if you happen to be a paparazzo.
Jourdan Dunn
English supermodel Jourdan Dunn is one of the paparazzi's favorite targets in the UK, and while she seems relatively OK with being constantly surveilled by the cameras, her friends are not so reasonable. In 2015, Jourdan was at the center of a paparazzi clash involving a photographer and one of her friends.
Jourdan's unknown friend was accompanying the supermodel to a Love Magazine party when he flipped and started beating a snotty photographer. Probably knowing that the situation would be in the celebrity news in a matter of minutes, Jourdan tried to stop the fight but she was unable to control the situation.
Cameron Diaz
In 2004, actress Cameron Diaz and singer Justin Timberlake were one of celebrity news's favorite couples, but the feeling was hardly mutual. The celebrity power-couple was sued by a couple of photographers after a violent physical outburst that resulted in a bleeding paparazzo and a broken camera.
Reportedly, Timberlake approached the bleeding photographer while he was down on the ground to tease him and remind him of his inferiority, but the beating was all Cameron's responsibility! At the time, she was properly prepared for a good fight after appearing in the action-adventure blockbuster Charlie's Angels.
Orlando Bloom
Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom was just trying to have a nice time riding his bike. But as soon as he stepped out of the house, he saw that a crew of photographers was waiting outside to ruin his relaxing afternoon trip. Naturally, the Pirates of the Caribbean star snapped and tried to steal a paparazzo's camera.
Not known for being a violent character, Orlando was once involved in a feud with the musician Justin Bieber. The fight was probably motivated by Orlando's ex-wife, Australian model Miranda Kerr, and involved loud insults from Bieber and a poorly applied punch from Orlando.
Liev Schreiber
In the popular Showtime series Ray Donovan, actor Liev Schreiber is used to helping celebrities to get out of complicated paparazzi confrontations. But in real life, he seems to be highly inefficient when dealing with the photographers who follow him around.
In 2018, Liev was facing charges coming from a paparazzo called Sherwood Martinelli after reportedly damaging his camera during a New York confrontation. Martinelli, who claims to be an amateur photography enthusiast and not a pap, asked for financial compensation after reportedly seeing his camera get ruined by what he described as a vicious attack coming from a "raging bull".
Naomi Campbell
The former supermodel and always-gorgeous Naomi Campbell is not the kind of pretty girl you would want to mess around with. In 1998, she was ordered to take anger management classes after hitting her personal assistant; 10 years later, in 2008, she was involved in a confrontation with the police after losing her luggage at London's Heathrow Airport.
Finally, she slammed an Italian paparazzo's eye with her luggage in 2009, while vacationing in the Mediterranean archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. Her luxury vacation was ruined by the event and Naomi ended up paying a court settlement to the photographer Gaetano Di Giovanni 4 years later, in 2013.
Val Kilmer
From a celebrity's point of view, airports are a terrible place to have an encounter with the paparazzi. American actor Val Kilmer is yet another celeb who was involved in a strange airport feud with a photographer, after slapping the camera of an annoying man who was following him around.
With half of his face covered by a scarf, Kilmer appeared extremely thin and unable to speak correctly. Chances are he was at the time undergoing treatment for a throat tumor that has taken a heavy toll on his general health and appearance. Under the circumstances, we can only sympathize with Kilmer's situation.
Azealia Banks
American female rapper Azealia Banks started making waves in the hip-hop world with the release of her inventive single 212, in 2011. But since then she's been better known for her controversial comments and social media posts than for her futuristic-styled songs.
Naturally, there's a pap clash in Azealia's past. In 2013, she was facing accusations of assault at a Manhattan court when she lashed out against the awaiting photographers in a quite LGBTQ-hating manner. She called them the F-word over and over before entering a black SUV and leaving the court premises.
Cara Delevingne
Actress/model Cara Delevingne is one of the most popular new Hollywood stars, and she's exemplary when dealing with the paparazzi. Do you want to show your discontentment for having a crowd of photographers waiting for you to leave the house? Why not use water guns?
Channeling her rage towards the paps through a toy-gun, Cara was able to quickly escape the nosy journalists without recurring to violence. A smart choice, considering there's no way somebody is going to sue you based on a water gun attack! In 2020, Cara Delevingne will be appearing in the upcoming movie Punk.
Avril Lavigne
Pop-punk superstar Avril Lavigne is an outspoken defender of the celebrities' right to privacy. In an interview with Maxim magazine, she confessed feeling sympathy for Britney Spears, who was at the time a recurring target of the celebrity news journalists. Additionally, she accused the paparazzi of being in the origin of countless car accidents and mispractices.
Considering what eventually happened to Britney in the late 2000s, we have to agree with Avril here. While we're all fans of timely-delivered celebrity news, there's a line the paparazzi should never be allowed to cross. Celebrities have limited patience and are real people just like the rest of us.
Iggy Azalea
Australian singer Iggy Azalea obtained worldwide recognition with the release of her 2014 debut album, The New Classic. One of the drawbacks of getting recognized is dealing with nosy paparazzi, like the one who stalked her during a night-out shopping in Los Angeles.
Completely enraged, Azalea called some nasty names to the photographer and went as far as spitting in his face. Ironically, the paparazzo reacted by asking if she was infected with AIDS or Ebola... The Fancy singer responded quickly by wishing the man's death and leaving the premises.
Jude Law
Back in 2009, a few years before the #METOO movement, actor Jude Law had miraculously escaped unpunished after allegedly hitting a female paparazzi. The woman was the 28-year-old photographer Harsha Gopal, who considered the attack to be both deliberate and painful.
In response, Jude's lawyers considered the "assault" to be an accident, claiming the actor was just raising his hand to shield himself from the camera's light. Judging by the picture above we're not so sure this is the correct version of the story; after all, we can detect a lot of hate in Jude Law's eyes... A story to be continued?
Bjork
Icelandic singer Bjork is one of the world's most respected recording artists, but she seems to dislike airports as much as any traveling musician. In 1996, while at Bangkok's airport, she attacked a snotty reporter with a slap in the head. 12 years later, the situation was reprised at a New Zealand airport.
Surveilled by an annoying paparazzo at the Auckland International Airport, Bjork simply snapped and attacked the man, much to his companion's shock. She ended up tearing the photographer's shirt and probably hurting herself in the process, as she reportedly fell to the ground.
Kate Moss
In recent history, few celebrity couples have caused so much commotion amongst the paparazzi like the one comprised of supermodel Kate Moss and troublemaker musician Pete Doherty. These two meant scandal, controversy, drugs, and rock & roll, and every photographer in the United Kingdom knew it! As a result of the non-stop harassment, Kate went nuts and violently assaulted a couple of photographers with her probably extremely expensive purse.
A well-known paparazzi-hater, Kate is still getting in trouble with the celebrity media today! In 2019, while attending a party with pop singer Lady Gaga, she punched a pap unexpectedly and stopped only when Gaga's entourage got involved.
Mike Tyson
It takes a special kind of bravery to be the photographer assigned with the task of following Mike Tyson around. The former pugilist is now best-known for his entertaining TV appearances than for his boxing ring days, but he's still one of the hardest-hitting punchers in the world!
In 2009, paparazzo Tony Echeverria was probably fearing for his life as he was confronted by an out-of-patience Mike Tyson. The former athlete was luckily able to control his strength and throw a moderately weak punch at the photographer, who was for that reason able to escape alive... No charges were pressed against Tyson.
Jessica Biel
In a move that was first popularized by Britney Spears, actress Jessica Biel decided to assault a naggy paparazzo with her umbrella after leaving a yoga class in Santa Monica. Wearing flip-flops and sweat pants, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre star showed a different side of her normally sweet and kind personality.
We know that the paps can be obnoxiously insensitive to celebrities' privacy, but we were not expecting to see Biel go into full rage mode. Since yoga is supposed to be a relaxing and peaceful activity, we guess Biel wasn't paying that much attention at classes...
Adam Lambert
When an on-vacation Adam Lambert was spotted by a paparazzo at a Miami beach, things got a little out of hand. The singer started by shouting out "Whataya want from me?" and soon enough the situation got physical... Fortunately, no one got seriously injured.
The big beach hat and sunglasses proved insufficient for Adam Lambert to hide his identity and a committed paparazzo was able to make the most out of the situation. Popularized after finishing second in the 8th season of American Idol, Adam Lambert has released 5 studio albums and toured with the iconic classic rock band Queen.
Kelly Osbourne
The daughter of the rock singer Ozzy Osbourne and British TV personality Sharon Osbourne, Kelly became popular as a teenager, thanks to the reality show The Osbournes. Later, she appeared on Dancing with the Stars, featured in a couple of movies, and released 3 music singles.
Often followed around by the paparazzi, Kelly knows how to make the most out of the journalists' attention. In a move that probably inspired Cara Delevingne, she used a toy water gun to spray the unwanted cameras away. A smart way to prevent the paps from getting too close, all without turning to violence!
Dane Bowers
English DJ/singer Dane Bowers was popularized as a former member of the British boy-band Another Level. Now, over 19 years after the group's separation, he's been on the celebrity news headline for completely different reasons.
It turns out Dane Bowers has a bit of an anger issue. Besides ending up in a fairly violent fight with a surprised paparazzo, he was recently involved in a fight at Butlins. Dane and his brother caused a commotion at the British restaurant and were consequentially arrested by the authorities. In 2010, Dane Bowers finished second in the 7th season of Celebrity Big Brother.
